What s hot at this year s Cannes festival

This week marks the start of the Cannes Film Festival – the annual extravagance of style, fashion and culture on the French Riviera that simply everyone who's anyone has to be seen at, whether they're in the movie biz or not.

The world's biggest and most glamorous film festival isn't just about the flicks. In addition to the usual array of arthouse pieces, directorial debuts and first sightings of some of the summer's biggest blockbusters, there's also a wealth of parties, fashion shows and red carpet paparazzi lines to navigate, so the stars will all want to look their best in an effort to attract the lens.

So if you're keen to catch up on the latest trends for summer 2014 and imitate them yourself – whether its with a whole new wardrobe or a couple of well chosen accessories such as a stylish Ted Baker phone case, all eyes should be on the French coast for the next two weeks. So read on for our brief guide to what you can expect to see.

Old-style Hollywood

This year, old-style Hollywood glamour is set to be the order of the day – with the tone to be set right from the opening premiere of the event, Grace of Monaco, which kicks off the festival today (May 14th). The controversial biopic of Grace Kelly and her relationship with Prince Rainier of Monaco has already been making waves for its accuracy – or supposed lack of it – but one thing you can be sure of is it will bring a touch of 50s style to the occasion.

The film stars Nicole Kidman – no stranger to Cannes, as she was on the jury that selected the prestigious Palme d'Or for best film. Grazia has noted the Australian beauty knows how to dress to impress at Cannes, last year's showing off designs from Dior, Valentino and Giorgio Armani. And you can be sure she'll be channelling some of Grace Kelly's style on the red carpet, with stunning ball gowns set to be the order of the day.

"As Grace of Monaco will be the talk of the town, we hope to see many stars doing a Grace wearing yacht-appropriate capris and full 50s skirts," the fashion mag added.

The Marilyn look

One of the big fashion highlights of Cannes is always the amfAR gala to raise awareness of AIDS, organised by former Vogue editor Carine Roitfeld. This year the show is set to paint the town red – literally, as that's the colour that will be the central theme of the night. The 2014 event, on May 22nd, is dedicated to screen icon Marilyn Monroe and some of the world's top fashion designers are contributing one-off scarlet gowns that reflect her style.

Alexander McQueen, Alexander Wang, Calvin Klein, Roberto Cavalli, Christian Dior, Christopher Kane, Giorgio Armani, and Tom Ford are all taking part in the show, with the items to be auctioned straight off the catwalk for charity.

Bling is back

Along with the 50s gowns, you can also expect to see the big names tricking out their attire this year with some seriously big accessorising. It was noted by the Herald Sun that in recent years, the stars have favoured small, delicate jewellery, with thin tennis bracelets, small stud or droplet earrings and dainty rings.

But this year, subtlety is set to be thrown out of the window, with big, bold dazzlers expected to blind anyone who looks too long. Official jewellery partner Chopard     will unveil a 67-piece collections for the event that's expected to be heavy on the diamonds, with the centrepiece 'Riviera' said to feature "brilliant-cut, navette-cut and pear-cut gems with a foliage effect that will intertwine between the precious jewels".

Who to spot

As always, you won't be able to turn around at Cannes this year without bumping into celebrities showing off their style. Hugh Jackman and Natalie Portman are among the faces adorning the huge posters throughout the town, while A-listers set to put in an appearance include Sienna Miller, Hailee Steinfeld, Eva Mendes, Lea Seydoux, Hilary Swank, Christina Hendricks, Saoirse Ronan and Kristen Stewart.

Some of them will even be working in between sips of champagne, with Ryan Gosling showcasing his directorial debut at the festival, while this year's jurors include Sofia Coppola. And in slightly less-stylish news, stars of the Expendables 3 Sylvester Stallone, Harrison Ford and Arnold Schwarzenegger are expected to invade Cannes aboard a tank in order to promote their latest geriatric action-thriller – so it's not all glamour and arthouse.
