After weeks of waiting to see which new devices would be unveiled at the eagerly-anticipated Apple Keynote in Cupertino, the all-new tech is finally with us. The event was widely-tipped to be showcasing a brand new 4-inch Apple iPhone and that’s exactly what we got – along with a brand new 9.7-inch iPad (the Apple iPad Pro) and a few new accessories. Apple has been at the forefront of everyone’s minds recently, not least because of their ongoing battle with the U.S. Government. Whilst their struggle with the FBI on data-sharing and privacy issues is a hot topic right now, we’re here to talk all about their brand new devices; namely, the Apple iPhone SE.
The Apple iPhone SE wasn’t entirely what we expected, as the 4-inch device retains the same dimensions as the Apple iPhone 5 and iPhone 5S, instead of having an updated design that mimicked the iPhone 6 but in a more compact size. The new model does sport the recent development in the rose gold shade and the internal specs are definitely worth boasting about.
Apple are renowned for being industry-leaders in the smartphone market but with the Apple iPhone 5S lagging behind by current specification standards, Apple have been without a small model that could compete with rivals like Sony and HTC. Stating that they sold 30 million 4-inch smartphones last year, Apple made a considered case for redeveloping their smaller smartphone.

Whilst the souped-up small device might not replace our trusty iPhone 6, there’s a case to be made for grabbing yourself one of the new smartphones (set to start shipping on March 31st). Here’s what we love about the iPhone SE:
The affordability factor
Apple have announced that the iPhone SE will retail for $399 for the entry-level model, which sets it well apart from the flagship iPhone 6S, currently retailing for $649+. UK pricing equivalents have yet to be officially released but the device is set to retail for £359. With contracts starting at around £15 per month on a 24-month inclusive plan, you can buy in to the premium brand and receive an actually quite good smartphone in return.
The new model presents a great opportunity for first-time smartphone users and parents that are kitting out their older kids – or just for anybody that would prefer not to pay a sky-high price for their smartphone.
When Apple introduced the similarly off-piste iPhone 5C in September 2013, the smartphone gave an exciting new design at a cheaper price but presented second-tier specifications. This time around, instead of giving us a budget smartphone that packs corresponding specifications, the Apple iPhone SE actually boasts a strong tech line-up.
Sporting the same 64-bit Apple A9 processor together with the M9 motion co-processor as the iPhone 6S, the iPhone SE is on top of its game technically. Equipped with the “Hey Siri” prompt support (well joked about at Apple’s keynote speech on March 21st), 12MP iSight camera and 4K video ability, the SE is quite the special edition smartphone.
It’s available in rose gold
If, like us, you’re particularly fond of the rose gold variety of iPhone 6S and 6S Plus, you’ll be pleased to see that the Apple iPhone SE will sport the pretty colour-way too. Joining the two flagship smartphones, the iPhone SE is available in each of the four colours – Space Grey, Silver, Gold and Rose Gold.
The new Apple smartphone features the same design as its predecessor, the Apple iPhone 5S, however we think that the luxe, rose gold finish looks particularly good on the signature design.
If you’re currently a proud owner of one of Apple’s taller, flagship styles – be it the 6 or the 6S Plus – you might be hard-pushed to opt for the smaller smartphone. However, there’s definitely enough phone users that will welcome this new addition to Apple’s mobile line-up – after all, 30 million 4-inch iPhone’s were sold last year. That’s quite the statistic.
