The best British brands you’ve never heard of (but should have)

April welcomes a healthy amount of national festivity, in the form of both St. George’s Day – commemorating the life of the patron saint of England, whose cross forms the national flag – and the Queen’s birthday. Queen Elizabeth II turned 90 on April 21st, and her birthday was celebrated with tributes abound and a set of new Royal Mail postage stamps. Very English indeed.

In the midst of drinking more than a few cups of tea, we thought we’d join in on the action and talk about the best of British with you too. Rather than ramble on about Yorkshire Tea (did you know we include a free cuppa with all orders?) or Eastenders, we thought we’d talk about the British brands we’re loving at the moment (don’t worry, not us). Here’s our round-up of the best brands you might not have heard of, but probably should have.

Even as true smartphone champions, we’re not averse to heading straight to pen and paper every now and then; there’s something refreshing about hand-written letters, invitations and notes that can’t always be captured digitally. London-based StudioSarah is a luxury stationery brand created by designer Sarah Silver. Created from an enduring love of paper goods and combined with a background in editorial design, StudioSarah brings a stylish collection of greetings cards, notebooks and stationery accessories that can’t be missed.

We’re not quite as fashion-conscious as London’s F-Row regulars but we’d like to think that we scrub up pretty well. Not to mention, we think we have a pretty keen eye for design and the unwavering British optimism when it comes to dressing (read: shorts in February).

When it comes to dressing well, our first port-of-call is always Cheltenham-based, contemporary clothing brand, Olive. Taking ethical considerations to stylish new heights, Olive create simple and playful pieces that combine heritage with modernity and street style with understated elegance. After quietly joining the boutique fashion scene in 2010, you’ll now see Olive’s staple styles flaunted on fashion bloggers and vloggers alike, such as one of our favourites – Estée Lalonde.

From Jo Malone to Dipytique and everybody else in between, there’s no candle around that we won’t love. Perfect for gifting, relaxing and as an uplifting interior treat, candles are a firm favourite of many and we can see why. Luckily for us, the Croydon Candle Co. bring beautiful products in lovely packaging at unbeatable value for money. Born in Croydon (who’d have guessed?), the small batch candle company pride themselves on creating candles which are as natural as possible using only 100% soy wax, cotton core wicks and fragrance oils that are paraben-free. We like.
